Prepare for the health discussion
What does the person treating me need to know?
You do not need to know every medical term. Bring a plain list and have the health professional explain what it means for the treatment choice.
Bring a short health note
-
Bring the whole medicine list
Write the names of prescriptions, non-prescription products and anything else you take. Include other weight or diabetes treatments.
-
Name past health problems
Bring notes on your thyroid, stomach, pancreas, gallbladder and eyes. Ask which details need more discussion.
-
Mention plans as well as symptoms
Note any plans for pregnancy or surgery, and say if you take birth control pills.
-
Ask what needs checking next
Ask whether an exam, a test or an in-person visit is needed before a decision.
Why these topics come up
The tirzepatide labels connect thyroid history, stomach problems, other diabetes medicines, pregnancy and surgery with specific cautions.

Medullary thyroid cancer is a rare thyroid cancer; the labels exclude treatment if you or a relative have had it.
MEN 2, a rare condition passed down through families, also rules out use, as does a known serious allergy to tirzepatide or any added ingredient.
If a relative’s thyroid cancer diagnosis is the only detail you have, say so. Ask the person treating you to help check the diagnosis in medical records. Ask about the inherited condition by name; you do not need to identify either illness yourself.

Tirzepatide can temporarily reduce how well birth control pills prevent pregnancy.
The Zepbound label calls for added protection or a non-pill method during the four weeks following treatment’s start or any increase.
The label also says treatment is stopped when pregnancy is recognized.

If the screen is not enough
Medical-board guidance requires the treating professional to organize any tests the care needs or make a referral for an in-person assessment.
Find out who will organize that next step and how your treating professional will receive the result.
